Boston doesn’t host the same spectacularly star-studded, haute couture saturated fashion week as NYC or Paris, for examples, but our week aims to feature the local industry and the big timers. The Betsey Johnson shop is a staple of Newbury Street, Boston’s premiere shopping district. On Wednesday, Sept. 30th, the design house took over Boston club The Estate and exhibited the latest fashions.
The dwarfed runway stuck out into the main floor, leaving plenty of room for the fashion show attendees cum partiers to dance, drink, and socialize. The party atmosphere and the fun DJ kept people from noticing the show started an hour late; most people were too busy spending their lives’ savings on the over priced drinks ($12 for the smallest, weakest rum and coke I’ve ever had).
The show started around 11:30 – a mess of teased hair, tulle, skulls, sequins, goth eye make up, and weird looking models. The strangeness should be expected with Betsey Johnson, and she didn’t let us down. The collection ranged from sleek satin dresses to frilly, debaucherous, Vaudevillian creations. Most of the dresses resembled old prom disasters circa 1985. Johnson’s kitschy sweaters – featuring skulls and Marilyn Monroe graphics – and a fitted Little Black Dress with a zipper down the front seemed to be the most wearable pieces of the collection, yet not particularly original. The models’ thickly rimmed eyes and burgundy lips offset by fantastical headpieces added to the high level of bizarre.
Thank you to Michael Connors for the photos.

nice to read about boston fashion week…
it was something diferent and intresting fashion show that boston fashion week done.
From my point of view, there is nothing to say or comment particularly. Fashion queens are not pleasant to eye and they are not admiring in any aspect. Especially T shirts are not charming as they are featuring with skull etc. There is no originality in any thing and negative tendencies are found everywhere. I am sorry to say my frank opinion. Thank you sir.
