Folk-Rock of Mumford & Sons

For two weeks I walked past the poster advertising Mumford & Sons album “Sigh No More” thinking it was an ad for an old TV sitcom Stepford and Son. How’s that for observations skills? In reality Mumford & Sons are four West London lads- Marcus Mumford, Country Winston, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwayne, who are doing something unthinkable. Making me love folk music. They look like the desperate romantics with their good looks and floppy hair, and their songs are full of wistful lyrics about London winter winds and lonely hearts. It’s passionate and honest music with a wicked wry sense of humor. London has a thriving folk scene, clawing its way up from the sweaty underground folk clubs that are popping up everywhere. Another notable success story from the folk clubs is Laura Marling, whose sophomore album “I Speak Because I Can” peaked at number one on itunes.
Mumford & Sons released their debut album in America in February and a North-American tour will start in Montreal in May with some shows on the east-coast already sold out. They made their US debut in a one off, sold out show at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, which the LA Times called a “star-making turn.” Better get those tickets quick.
