A few weeks ago in London The Smiths were at The Drums. So was Boy George. It must have been like your Hot Tub Machine catapulted you in reverse from the 80s back to the future in 2010. The music sounded the same and everyone was there, but fatter and on the wrong side of fourty. “I Felt Stupid” by The Drums is such perfect 80s retro, it would’ve been at home in the ending credits of a John Hughes movie. So much so, I could swear that’s where I heard it first. (Unlikely I know, as the members of The Drums were probably still in diapers when Molly Ringwald was prom queen.) Each year BBC releases its hugely influential “Sound of…” list of fresh acts whom they predict will have an impact that year, and in 2010 these Brooklyn boys made it to number 5. The Drums ( Johnathan Pearce-vocals, Jacob Graham-Guitar, Adam Kessler-Guitar and Connor Hanwick- Drums) describe themselves as a rock band that write pop songs. “We only write about two feelings: one is the first day of summer when you and all your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. The other is when you’re walking alone in the rain and realize you will be alone forever.”
