There are artists and then there’s Davood Roostaei. At first glance the art work of Davood Roostaei is a cluster of colors and out-of-sequence brush strokes. However, upon closer inspection you truly can begin to realize the genius within the art and the genius behind the art.

 

Davood Roostaei was born in 1959 in Sarab, Iran. In 1979, Iran was going through an Islamic Revolution and Davood realized that the new nation was no place for a young artist. As a result Davood left Iran and went to Germany. Davood attended the reputable Academics of Cologne and Hamburg. It was in Germany that Davood’s artistic talents flourished and have continued to do so.

 

Davood Roostaei has found his fame in an art style know as cryptorealism. Cryptorealism, as stated in Roostaei’s book “Cryptorealism & The Hidden Vision Quest,” is an innovative method making the invisible visible, combining physical and metaphysical dimensions of being, overlaying different layers of significance one upon the other. If you’re shaking your head and feeling stupid, I felt the same way. The only way to truly understand Davood’s art is to see him in action.

 

Davood is a magician when it comes to the canvas. Davood paints his visions and ideologies, but he does not use traditional methods to accomplish this. Davood no longer uses brushes or special utensils to paint. Davood simply uses his fingers. That’s right ladies and gentlemen:his fingers. It’s breathtaking! It’s almost hypnotic to watch Davood transform an empty canvas to an artistic master piece. His fingers fly across the canvas with elegance. Each finger is dipped into an individual color and he mixes the colors on the canvas as he paints.

 

When you look at his paintings you see layer upon layer of paint. And within each layer you see a familiar face or familiar historical building. I’ve looked at several of Davood’s painting and each time I look at them I see something new I haven’t noticed before. Davood’s paintings tell stories of the past, present, and even future.

 

Davood definitely has a very unique personality, but what genius doesn’t? He has memorized and can recite hundreds of ancient poems. Davood may appear as a matador when attending a party, or burst out into a romatic love song without notice. Davood has the ability to transport himself to different worlds and dimensions. In any case Davood, is a visionary genius who may be way before his time.
