Let the Rockabilly Live On!

Published on September th, 2008 - Author: bushe

Rockabilly music started with legends like Billy Haley, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley in the early 1950s. Since then it has been put to sleep and revived over and over again. The body-moving genre of music has been a favorite among many old souls.

Rockabilly cutie, vocalist and guitarist of the band The Rhythm Shakers, Marlene Perez has been a fan of the oldie-but-goodie sound since she was a toddler. The 23-year-old front woman has been dedicated to the rockabilly life style and sound since she was young. “My uncles all had low riders and were always listening to that kind of music. It was always around me,” says the girl with bright red lipstick and short bangs.

Marlene has been playing the rhythm guitar for a year and has already showed great jam talent with her band The Rhythm Shakers. With the help of boyfriend and bassist Victor Mendez, Marlene is maturing musically every day. But how does having a boyfriend in the band affect the rest of the band? It doesn’t. Unlike Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal, Marlene and Victor leave the domestic issues at home.

“We don’t put music first. It’s about music once we get into rehearsal,” Marlene goes on to say, “We separate our love from our music.”

The Rhythm Shakers is a four piece band signed to the only rockabilly label in the U.S., Wild Records. Only the cream of the crop get signed to Wild Records and The Rhythm Shakers are no exception. Being a band for only a year they have recorded plenty of demos and have their first and highly anticipated show with Los Straight Jackets, Luis and the Wildfires, and Lil’ Gizzelle at Safari Sam’s on September 19th.

Marlene may be a little nervous but it’s nothing a little liquid courage can’t cure. It is destined to be a good show, with lots of music, dancing, and drinking. You can listen to The Rhythm Shakers on their MySpace at www.myspace.com/wildrhythmshakers. Let the rockabilly live on!
