So I just got out of seeing the new James Bond film, and I have to say I’m filled with a mixture of sadness, exactitude and machismo. The machismo is always present after I watch a Bond film though. I watch them, and after, like all men, I want to be him. With the smoothness, badassness and the ability to just charismatically or physically persuade anyone. I have never truly met anyone as confident as Bond is portrayed. I mean maybe Daniel Craig isn’t acting in the film and he just is that awesome. But all I know is the way the character makes me feel, as I strut out of the theater with my sunglasses on, waiting to be attacked, so I can totally school some would-be assassin.
But during the movie I couldn’t help but feel a little depressed. All the classic Bond moments are no longer present, I mean there were at least a few cool gadgets in Casino Royale. But in Quantum it seems liked the only semi-futuristic gadgets were either in MI6 headquarters, or were Bond’s cell phone, which honestly wasn’t that impressive to me. To me, Bond films have always bordered on Sci-Fi, either the gadgets Q gave him, or the nefarious plot being hatched by whatever villain is attempting to take over the world. It just seems to me that with each new Bond film they are trying to ground them closer and closer into reality, as opposed to being the adventurous relief of everyday life. The fact that Quantum’s plot had to do with the environment, oil and water supply was just too close to actual real world problems. Also the fact that it showed the shady dealings government agencies shake on, to make sure the world continues on spinning, just brought me to an all new level of government hatred. Also, I understand that Desmond Llewelyn is dead and can no longer play Q, but in my opinion John Cleese was a very good replacement. So I beg you MGM: BRING Q BRANCH BACK!
As far as the actors go, Daniel Craig is a very good Bond, for the way the films have been going at least, I mean he’s no Sean Connery. Olga Kurylenko is a pretty good Bond girl, she very much has that fiery/sultry stare that can both scare and entice you. Personally though I thought Gemma Arterton was way hotter, with her strawberry hair, and cute little disposition, I guess she fills in the Money Penny flirtatiousness. I would have much rather watched her alongside Bond for the entirety of the movie.
So overall I’d give Quantum of Solace 4 stars out of 5. Other than my little misgivings of the way it strays from classic Bond mythos it is a very, very enthralling and entertaining film.
Peach Out.
