When attending a New Collisions show, an audience member can not only expect an energetic and flawless set, but a lesson in rock ‘n roll high fashion taught by lead singer Sarah Guild. Her fabulous platinum hair, mile-long eyelashes, and colorful, shimmery clothes rocket her from talented singer to rock diva. Sarah kindly gave me insight on how to achieve her crazy cool looks.
Liv: I give you $100 to your favorite store; where do you go, and what do you buy?
Sarah: I’d go to New York City, to Beacon’s Closet. That place is epic! For $100, you can get 3-4 unique pieces.
Liv: What’s your favorite on-stage outfit, and why?
Sarah: My loud blue ‘tropical bird’ outfit; it’s knit with huge sleeves and different hues of blue/purple and super short. I wear it with turquoise tights, electric blue pumps, a skinny yellow belt wrapped around twice, and metallic turquoise earrings.
Liv: What magazines do you read?
Sarah: Honestly I’m not heavy into magazines, I’ll pick up whatever’s around. But I usually page through the local as well as the national music mags: Spin, Filter, etc. I recently got turned on to Bust.
Liv: How does your music influence your style, and vice versa?
Sarah: Being a performer, I can get away with statement-making pieces and choose to draw on the iconic looks of other performers. I love color and creating a striking silhouette, mostly emphasizing my lower half Several of my stage outfits have big sleeves or that eighties belted look. Having a colorful, fun aesthetic fits the music but is also a key part of our identity; it’s a catalyst for continuing to create the dancy vibe that draws people in.
Liv: Top 5 clothing or make up staples?
Sarah: 1. Definitively black fishnets/colorful tights, 2. my electric blue and black faux snakeskin heels (Michael Kors), 3. black American Apparel sleeveless t cut dress 4. heavy black mascara (still searching for the One) 5. since my hair is a key part of my look, I rely on Aveda’s blue malve conditioner to maintain my color.
Liv: What is your favorite album or record cover?
Sarah: Tough one…doesn’t everyone say Sgt. Pepper’s? Aside from that, off the top of my head, Cyndi Lauper’s She’s so Unusual or Elvis Costello’s My Aim is True.
Liv: Do the cities you play in influence your style? What’s your favorite street style?
Sarah: I guess the urban setting has pushed me towards edgier looks, re-enforced my tendency towards black
Liv: How does it feel to be compared to greats such as Debbie Harry and Dale Bozzio?
Sarah: I’m really floored; it’s the best possible compliment but it means I have big shoes to fill.
